The film’s hero, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former Marine who was injured and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is picked to participate in the Avatar program, which will allow him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, a abundant jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon packed with fantastic species, some wonderful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race, who are thought of as primitive, yet are more physically able than humans. Standing three meters tall (nearly 10 feet), with tails and gleaming blue skin, the Na’vi reside in concord with their unspoiled world. As humans invade deeper into Pandora’s forests in pursuit of valuable minerals, the Na’vi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence.

Avatar was originally set for release on May 22, 2009 during filming, but the film was pushed back to December 18, 2009. This was done to enable more post-production time, and to also provide additional time for theaters worldwide to put in 3D projectors. The film’s aspect ratio will be 1.85:1 in 3D, but a CinemaScope (2.35:1) format will be extracted for 2D screenings. Avatar will also be released in IMAX 3D.The first photo of the movie was released on 14 August 2009, and Empire Magazine released exclusive images from the film in its October issue.

* Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer: Rockwell was considered for the part of Tony Stark in the original motion picture, and he accepted the role of Hammer prior to reading the script. He had never heard of the character before he was contacted about the part, and was unaware Hammer is an old man in the comics, whereas in the movie he will be much closer to Stark’s age. He will perform as one of the movies main antagonists, possibly the main one.
